Chief Research Officer

Position Overview:
University of North Florida, in partnership with the national search firm Scott Healy & Associates, invites applications and nominations for the position of Chief Research Officer.

To solidify the position of the University of North Florida (UNF) as a new R2 and position the University for R1 status, we are seeking an experienced research leader and administrator for the position of Chief Research Officer.

The Chief Research Officer will work closely with the Senior Associate Provost for Faculty and Research, the Assistant Vice President for Research, and the team in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP) to expand programs in basic and applied research in but not limited to Advanced Manufacturing; Coastal Resilience; Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Information Technologies; Healthcare and Health Strategies, and Transportation and Logistics. The Chief Research Officer will work with faculty, staff, funding agencies, corporate partners and other universities and labs to advance new research and innovation opportunities, especially those that are interdisciplinary in nature.

This position reports to the Provost and Vice President, Academic and Student Affairs. Salary is commensurate based on qualifications and relevant experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Facilitate building and diversifying UNF's funded research portfolio in Advanced Manufacturing; Coastal Resilience; Data Science, Cybersecurity, and Information Technologies; Healthcare and Health Strategies, and Transportation and Logistics in accordance with the UNF Strategic Plan Areas of Focus. Convene faculty, department chairs, deans, center directors and other stakeholders in the relevant colleges to achieve this goal.
Oversee functioning and growth of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP).
Develop and oversee an Office of Proposal Development and facilitate visits for faculty to funding agencies in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere as appropriate.
Support government relations at the state and federal level as they impact the responsibilities of the ORSP.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in a physical science, data science, health science, social science, or engineering with an exceptional reputation as a researcher and student mentor.
A broad understanding of academic research funding opportunities, research development, proposal development, and grant management.
A successful record of accomplishment in developing and managing interdisciplinary teams and collaborations.
Experience in academic administration.
Supervisory experience.
Direct experience with DOD, DOE, NSF, USDOT, USDOE, and/or other similar funding agencies.
An expertise or deep interest in using data to inform advancement of the institution's research strength.
Knowledge of the academic research enterprise including regulatory compliance, contracting, sponsored programs, technology transfer, and other research administration functions.

The University of North Florida was first chartered in 1965. The campus was selected in 1969, construction began in 1971, and the University opened its doors to approximately 2,000 upper-level students in the fall of 1972. In 1973, UNF graduated its first class of 35 students. The University was quick to expand and was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1974. The school's mascot, Ozzie the Osprey, was adopted in November 1979. In 1984, UNF began admitting freshmen. UNF entered intercollegiate sports in 1983 as a member of the NAIA, later moving to NCAA Division II. The North Florida Ospreys made the move to Division I in 2009, competing in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Since then, UNF's 19 athletic teams have excelled winning numerous conference championships and regularly competing in postseason play. In 2015, the men's basketball team received its first invitation to NCAA Basketball Tournament.

The University of North Florida is an emerging force in research in health, coastal sciences, logistics and more. UNF offers 64 bachelor's degrees with 80 areas of concentration, 45 master's degrees with 88 areas of concentration, and six doctoral degrees with three areas of concentration.
